Breaking News!!! Schoolie Stripers Invade Kennebec..
(5/31/12 Craig, Mark & Angie with one of many triple headers)
It's been an interesting Start to the 2012 Striper Season here in Maine...So far I've seen a wide range of sizes of fish from yardstik long jumbos to foot long micros....This morning I had a group from Minnesota aboard, we departed from the dock in Bath around 8am to catch the oubound tide...When I crawled out of bed this morning I had a specific game plan in my head...well you know how that goes...less than 5 minutes from the dock we run into a huge school of breaking stripers and wisely abandoned plan A in favor of Plan B...for the better part of an hour and a half my four anglers wailed on schoolie after schoolie...We lost count on how many we boated but it was a triple digit kind of a day. Double hookups were the norm, triple hookups common enough and even a few quad hook ups just to say we did it!!!...Although it was pretty remarkable, the most amazing part of the day was not the numbers of fish we caught, rather the size of the fish. Small schoolie stripers have once again pushed into Maine in big numbers and are now chewing their way up the main stem of the mighty Kennebec river...normally I would not get so excited about seeing small fish but Striped Bass have been in decline for a few years now and the lack of small fish was a cause for concern...The last couple of years have been great spawning years and I take this influx of young stripers that are showing up all over the north atlantic coast as a great sign for the resource...Also just a little reminder to myelf and everyone else, when you get into a big blitz of fish....crimp down those barbs on your hooks and take it easy on those little guys!!

Nice, and as you say Captain, good to see the schoolies return. The land of 10,000 lakers got to see the land of 10,000 estuaries...
ReplyDeleteHaha..love your comments...Not my best video attempt by a longshot but when you have four happy anglers aboard that are constantly hooked up...who the heck cares!!!
