This past week we were able to get both boats into the water at the Kennebec Tavern & Marina. Our timing was just about perfect as Stripers are now migrating into the Kennebec river system. This morning we untied the boat and cruised downriver to prospect for fish that we suspected would be feeding in the fast ebbing tide...I didn't take too long before we were tight to the first fish, a healthy ocean bright fish that slammed a RonZ jig that we were skipping off the bottom near a large sandbar. We covered a bunch of water today and not surprisingly we had the best action when we found warmer water and a mix of Britt herring and alewives. It's still very early in the striper season here in Maine but we are underway.
Tips that I'll offer this week are to get out and fish the outgoing tides in the tidal rivers...look for areas of warmer water and work the methodically. herring imitating flies fished off a sinking head line will work well for fly anglers. Jigs, soft plastics and plugs fished on light tackle will bring you success if you work them SLOWLY!! For anglers that fish outside of the Special regs area of the kennebec river, the same techniques will work as will live & chunk baits fished in the surf lines...as we move into June we should expect to see the bulk of the migration arrive. This is one of the funnest times of the year for striper fishermen, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement...please remember to take care when handling these fish..use the proper tackle and release these stripers back into the water gently and rapidly to help insure that we can fish for these great fish for many years to come!!
Glad you're OTW Captain...shooting for mid June (ugh)due to extensive work load...can't wait for Out of Bounds livelining action...hope to EPIC a day with you like last June...be safe and have a great Double Super Fly year...
