Maine Striper Fishing Report August 20th, 2013

This past week i was extremely fortunate to have one of the legends of the outdoor world aboard for a couple of days of Striped Bass fishing...Joining me was Captain Tred Barta...When Tred contacted me and explained that he had this 75 year old orvis battenkill bamboo 5wt fly rod that he wanted to catch a Striper on, I jumped at the chance...mind you that this is Tred Barta we're talking about...legendary fisherman, top rated tv personality, world record holder etc etc etc. The short story is that we fished hard for two days, we caught some nice Stripers and Tred got his Striped Bass on his prized flyrod...the rest of the Story will be published in Sport Fishing Magazine which Tred has written the back Story for over 35 years...
now on to The  reportsStriper fishing has remained solid in the Midcoast region although the bite has shifted into deeper water which is typical of daytime fishing in August...we have also been taking some beautiful fish out of the shallow water surf lines...big shouldered fish!!

Maine Striper Fishing Reports August 8th, 2013

WOW!!!The Fuse has been lit folks and the Kennebec is on fire right now...how long it will continue is anyone's guess but with the water temps where they are and the amount of bait that we have, i'd say that it's a safe bet that we'll have great fishing right through the middle of October...Big fish, slot fish, and small schoolies are roaming all through the lower Kennebec. We have been having great success lately using a variety of tackle, artificial lures, flies and of course live & chunk mackerel have been deadly. Early mornings have been best for fly fishing so if that is the game that you want to play, be prepared to leave the dock early for the best success...Once the sun gets high, bouncing jigs or drifting bait through the rips has been deadly...even in bright sun. I've also had some success fishing chunk baits in shallow water for some big Stripers, even in the middle of the afternoon!!!
I cant say one way or the other which tide is working better as both tides have some great opportunities for flats and deeper water structure...I am having one of my busiest seasons in recent years and all this time on the water translates into big dividends for my charter guests...One thing that is noticeably absent so far this season are bluefish...Yes I have had some bluefish aboard but it has been really random...We haven't seen those huge schools of slashing bluefish. The lack of bluefish might be why the Striper fishing has been so good lately...when the blues show up the bait disappears...IN A HURRY!!! It would not hurt my feelings if the blues stayed away but that is just wishful thinking...Any day now they'll be here!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report August 4th, 2013

(Some video clips of our "Total Tidal Experience" yesterday 8/3/2013)
The great fishing in the Kennebec region continues into August!! We have been fishing two tides daily and have not really found one to be out performing the other. Most of my focus lately has been in the River from Bath to the oceanfront...the rips and flats have been alive with fish during the peak flow periods...some days we really hammer the fish in certain tide rips...other days its a fish or two out of each rip before moving on to the next spot...either way makes for a great trip...some of the shallow flats have been producing quality stripers too...catching mid 30 inch stripers in skinny water is a blast on light tackle...Still no reliable bluefish action although we do have a few around...it's still quite random!! Mackerel have been holding up well although some days it does require a bit searching before we find the mother load...a bag of chum hanging over the rail usually expedites the process of gathering macks. Over the course of the next ten days I do have some great afternoon tides open for live baiting trips after that I have some morning trips available too!!

Kennebec River Striped Bass Report July 28th, 2013

Another day of repeat clients...another slay session...If you've been keeping up with this blog than you know that we are on the fish daily...this does not happen by accident. My day starts at 2:30am and I am often prepping the boat for your trip in the pitch dark hours before the sun comes up...I do this mostly because I really want my clients to have the best possible chance to catch memorable fish...I also do this in small part due to my highly competitive nature...I have a strong desire to not let anyone on the water outwork me...This hard, behind the scenes, work often goes unnoticed but that doesn't matter to me...What does matter are the shots that my clients get to take at big stripers on a daily basis...That's what drives me and that's why I'm awake before my alarm goes off at 2:30am!!
(A nice fish that we caught on a shallow sand flat in less than 2 feet of water...many more would follow)

Maine Striper Fishing Report July 27th, 2013

Right now the fishing is very good in the midcoast region that includes the Kennebec watershed...We have been working the beaches, flats and river structure with a great deal of success...Coming off some monster tides and a full moon period we have some morning outgoing tides in front of us that are ripe for the picking...
Live and chunk mackerel continue to be the top producer but we have also done very well working bomber style plugs and soft plastic swimbaits through the rips. Fly fishing opportunities have been lagging somewhat compared to our other methods but that is to be expected for mid summer...However those hardcore fly anglers willing to be on the water before the sun gets high will do well...I do have some openings in August so if you are looking to get out with me this summer, I'd recommend making your plans right away...August is going to be another busy month...So call, text or email for available dates!!

Maine Saltwater Fishing Report July 19th, 2013

Great morning on the water today with Chris, Josie & their three young children...Catching some nice stripers on light tackle with his family was not a bad way for Chris to celebrate his birthday!!! Doubling up Stripers with his daughter Charlotte was priceless!!! This morning we left the dock at 7am to catch the last of the incoming, first of the outgoing tides on a shallow surf line...the first stop was for macks which were somewhat slow to come to the boat but we got what we needed. Next we got the boat set up to fish the surf line...almost immediately our baits started to get eaten by hungry stripers prowling that surf line...At one point we even had three rods get blasted amost simultaneously...Another great day on the water for the guests of Super Fly Charters!!!

Maine Striper Fishing report July 18th, 2013

we're halfway through the month of July and the Kennebec Region continues to impress...Today I had a first time striper anglers Mark & Kristy Roberts from Atlanta, GA aboard for some great light tackle action...Departing the Kennebec tavern at 5 am we cruised down river and out into the Atlantic Ocean...Our first goal was to load the baitwells with mackerel which we accomplished in short order...
next stop was to get setup on an Oceanside sand flat that that has been holding some nice stripers...the wait was short and the fish were large as we wasted little time in putting several nice stripers into the boat with light spinning gear...Live & Chunk mackerel seem to be what's working best in the river and out off the beaches...Fly & Artificial lures work well in periods of low light but once the sun gets up the fish do not respond nearly as well. Being out on the water everyday, We have the fish dialed in, we know where to find them and we know what they want to eat!!!

Maine Striped Bass Report July 13th, 2013

The fishing continues to be good in the Kennebec region...Today I had Michael & Debbie from Michigan aboard for a morning of Striper fishing...departing the Kennebec Tavern we cruised down the river several miles and got setup to drift a fast moving tide rip...a few drifts through and both anglers hooked up with thier first fish of the day...the next spot is becoming well known for a rogue seal that likes to steal bait and stripers right off the end of your line...this brazen fellow showed himself immediately as our first couple of drifts cam up with baitless hooks and at one point this seal was right at the rail of the boat looking for a handout...
At this point, with the sun is getting high and rogue seals on the hunt, I make the call to run for cooler water outside the river where big packs of stripers have been roaming the shallow surflines...We spent the remainder of the trip out on the surfline basically having to spoon feed the stripers...with bluebird conditions the stripers needed some coaxing but we got it done and both Debbie and mike landed some quality fish...

Maine Striper Fishing Report July,9th 2013

This afternoon I had newlyweds Brad & Brittany out for a half day Striped Bass slay session...Departing the Kennebec Tavern at the Crack O' Noon we blasted down the river and out onto the flat calm Atlantic ocean...A few drifts to pick up some Mackerel for bait and we were soon set up...what happened next will not be soon forgotten...immediately upon setting up we had several rods get violenty blasted nearly simultaneously(I'm talking mere SECONDS) Mayhem ensued as husband & wife battled massive stripers like old pro's...
Neither had ever caught stripers and Brittany had never even been on the ocean!!! Lots of high fives and big smiles followed each fish that came over the rail....as you can see in my reports, I have the local Striper population right under my thumb and that only comes from being on the water everyday...My motto for this season has been & will remain "WE WILL NOT BE OUT WORKED TODAY"

Maine Striper Fishing Report July 8th, 2013

Great morning on the water today with Striper nut Tony Pemerton from Rome, GA...Tony has caught some very nice landlocked Stripers in Georgia and was looking forward to fishing some ocean going stripers...We started out in the lower Kennebec river catching schoolie and slot size stripers on topwater & jigs before getting chased off the water by an ugly, fast moving, thunderstorm...A couple cups of coffee later and we were back on the boat with a fresh gameplan as we headed offshore for some live baits, which we had little trouble loading up on...then it was on to the striper grounds...It took us a while to gain momentum but once we hit our stride we had some pretty furious action with numerous stripers in the 30"-36" range and even boated one brute of a Striper that measured over 42" A personal best striper for Tony ...what a day!!!

(Some Great photos from this past weeks trips!! who knows you might recognize some of the faces)

I've Been running two charters daily, I'm tired but happy...This report will be very short...We have been putting the boots to the stripers everyday, BOTH TIDES!! Catching some of the bigger fish on live macks and running into some decent pop up blitz action with slot sized fish coming off the flats during draining tides...We are off to the best start in several years!!! WE WILL NOT BE OUTWORKED!!!

Kennebec River Striper Report July 1st, 2013

As is usually the case in july & august, I had two trips today...the first started at 6 am with regular clients Jan Leth & Dennis Hansen...these guys are usually up for anything so we opted to take advantage of the bait restriction being lifted and ran outside through the fog to load the livewell with macks...it took us a few minutes but we soon had a steady stream of bait coming over the rail...once we had our bait supply secured I swung the boat to the west and ran across a stiff chop to the mouth of the Kennebec...my first stop was a shallow flat that usually fishes well on an incoming tide...problem was the tide was going out so we didn't waste much time scouting and we left after 10-15 minutes...we would revisit this flat later in the day with much different results ;-)...the next spot was had the mother load waiting for us...several drifts in a row yielded torqued over rods and screaming drags as hefty 30+ inch class fish slammed our livebaits...this action would continue at each of the next several stops until the tide went slack and we headed back to the dock...The second trip had the Harris family from Georgia aboard. I hustled them downriver to a promising spot and on our very first drift we had a nice double header hookup...the first of many nice fish that the Harris family would boat over the next few hours several of which came from water 2' or less!!! THE FISHING IS GOOD RIGHT NOW!!!

Kennebec River Striped Bass Report June 27th, 2013

Today was the kind of morning that makes the experienced Striper fisherman smile when the alarm goes off at 2:30am...Checking the weather forecast and seeing nothing but overcast skies and fog is a dream come true...Not exactly chamber of commerce weather but the kind of weather that makes for some of the best slay sessions of the year. My guests for the day were Dewitt & Jane John of Brunswick, Me. who were the lucky winning bidders of a Striped Bass trip Auction that I had donated to Stripers Forever, a conservation group dedicated to the pursuit of making Striped Bass a game fish coast wide. We set the date and met at the Kennebec Tavern Marina at 5am this morning and set off down the river with a ripping outbound tide at or backs...The first flat we drifted was a trial run to work out some of the kinks with casting, retrieving etc. Once we got that out of the way we moved on to the edge of a large sandbar where Dewitt quickly hooked up with the first fish of the day...Moving further downriver we hit another, slightly deeper, flat that was in full on national geographic mode...screaming gulls, dive bombing terns, the whole shebang!!
We would work this spot over for quite some time as we boated fish after fish before the tide slacked and the fish quieted down...next stop produced a few more fish, and the next stop after that produced a nice double header... at this point we were just about done for the day when on the way back to the dock we came across another big school of stripers blitzing in a shallow cove just off the main channel of the river...We boated a few more fish here before throwing in the towel...Another great day on the Kennebec!!
