Maine Striper Fishing Report: Kennebec River June 6th, 2014

Yesterday morning I had John & Ashley aboard for a half day trip. We departed the Kennebec tavern around 830am to catch the last of the outgoing & the first of the incoming tide. We covered a lot of water to start the trip with little to show but as the tide started to swing we found what were were looking for. Schoolie Stripers smashing bait on top. Nearly every cast got blasted...Bone colored jumpin minnows walked across the surface were hammered repeatedly and 4" black sluggo on my own hand poured lead head jigs were money!! Areas south of the Kennebec are producing good action too. Casco Bay has produced some quality fish to go along with the school sized fish. There are some huge schools of Striped Bass working there way up the coast right now and it won't be long before they reach coastal Maine in huge numbers. The tidal rivers are plugged with herring  and Reports of mackerel are starting to trickle in...when the bulk of the stripers arrive they will have plenty to eat!! In the meantime get out there and fish...The stripers are here!!!

If you'd like to book a trip please get in touch ASAP...we have two boats and can accommodate larger parties with additional boats..we have lots of tides still available but they'll disappear fast!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report: Kennebec River May 31st, 2014

This past week we were able to get both boats into the water at the Kennebec Tavern & Marina. Our timing was just about perfect as Stripers are now migrating into the Kennebec river system.  This morning we untied the boat and cruised downriver to prospect for fish that we suspected would be feeding in the fast ebbing tide...I didn't take too long before we were tight to the first fish, a healthy ocean bright fish that slammed a RonZ jig that we were skipping off the bottom near a large sandbar. We covered a bunch of water today and not surprisingly we had the best action when we found warmer water and a mix of Britt  herring and alewives. It's still very early in the striper season here in Maine but we are underway.
Tips that I'll offer this week are to get out and fish the outgoing tides in the tidal rivers...look for areas of warmer water and work the methodically. herring imitating flies fished off a sinking head line will work well for fly anglers. Jigs, soft plastics and plugs fished on light tackle will bring you success if you work them SLOWLY!! For anglers that fish outside of the Special regs area of the kennebec river, the same techniques will work as will live  & chunk baits fished in the surf lines...as we move into June we should expect to see the bulk of the migration arrive. This is one of the funnest times of the year for striper fishermen, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement...please remember to take care when handling these fish..use the proper tackle and release these stripers back into the water gently and rapidly to help insure that we can fish for these great fish for many years to come!!
Now that we are operating with two boats our availability has doubled and we're very excited with the response that we've gotten and extra extra bookings that we've had this season...THANK YOU!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report: May 10th, 2014

As mentioned in a previous post we have expanded our operation to include a second 21 Parker light tackle boat...Team Super Fly member Capt. John & I hopped in the truck for a 50 hr door to door round trip to Anglers Marine located in Supply, NC...now that we have the boat back home sitting in my yard, we're going to add a few touches to the boat to improve it's fish ability. This boat is going to basically double our available tides. After running a Parker for 12 seasons it's was a no brainer to add a second one....these rugged, shallow draft boats are perfect for the amazing variety of habitat...from drifting the gnarly rips of the lower kennebec to working the surf pounded out islands and headlands of casco bay, we'll take you there safely with speed, and comfort.
Moving on to the reports ...friends of mine who fish out on Long Island ,NY are indicating a mix of schoolies & larger fish. Moving north to Massachusetts the reports that have filtered in from both the north and south shores are pretty good...far from gang busters but fly and light tackle guys fishing up in the estuaries during falling tides have had a lot of fun. Now on to Maine...everything here seems to be mostly on schedule...water temps are on the rise and bait is showing in mind boggling numbers. Reports of schoolie Stripers being caught in the Saco R & in the Scarborough marsh are a good sign..May is always a shaky month for Stripers in Maine but invariably the fish show up within the same two week time period year after year!!! My best fishing early season tides are usually the outgoing but in fishing there are no hard fast rules...if any of you have questions about early season fishing techniques feel free to call or text...we have a lifetime of experience on the Maine coast and will be more than happy to share some knowledge with you!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report: May 4th, 2014

Reports from the south indicate that the Stripers are slowly working their way northward which is great news. But the really big news for Super Fly Charters is that, my bro-in-law, Capt John Coppola and I are leaving this week for North Carolina to pick up the new Parker 21se...Capt John will be running this boat for us this season which is great news for anglers who wish to fish with us this season...as many of you know...My schedule fills up fast and having a second boat will free up some of the best tides of the year. We are looking forward to bringing this sweet boat home and adding a few custom touches to it..We'll be keeping this boat alongside the super fly at the Kennebec Tavern & Marina.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the water!!

Stay Salty My Friends!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report: Super Fly Charters, April 19th, 2014

Hello Everone!!! With the Striped Bass season rapidly approaching, I'd like to share this great new program that Stripers Forever is about to roll out to the public...Read the details below and if you'd like to participate just follow the links to enroll...It's free and your participation is important to insure the continued restoration of Striped Bass stocks along the atlantic coast. In addition to getting a release certificate from Stripers Forever...All of Super Fly Charters guests who release an over 36" fish will receive an 8X10 inch glossy print of their trophy to hang on the wall next to their Release Certificate... As many of you who have fished with us know...Super Fly Charters specifically targets these big fish and we go to great lengths to insure healthy releases of these important gamefish.

Release a Breeder Club

SF_FINAL_RAB_LOGO_01

About The Club

Welcome to the Stripers Forever Release A Breeder Club “RBC”. This program is designed by Stripers Forever to promote the release of large “breeding size” stripers which are mostly female fish. Current striped bass management practices have targeted large striped bass. The result has been a considerable decrease in the number of these large, old fish found in the population. Nature never intended it that way. Striped bass are the top predator in their inshore range, and historically it was not uncommon for individuals to live more than 20 years and spawn each year. This long spawning life is needed because conditions are often not suitable for the production of good year classes. The older fish produce many eggs, and when conditions are favorable to produce young stripers a robust spawning stock biomass insures that the waters will be well seeded with eggs. If conditions aren’t good the long lives of these fish and low natural mortality insure that there will be good spawning potential the next season. Unfortunately for the striped bass we have knocked this system seriously out of balance.
There are two categories, each with their own dedicated page for posting images and information on the breeder released. The first category is for Guides and/or charter boat captains who pledge to promote the release of breeders to their clients, the second for anglers who release a breeder while fishing with or without a guide/captain. Joining the club is free, and the rewards are recognition on the RBC membership pages of our website as well as the knowledge that you are doing your part to turn around the decline in striped bass.
There is no cost for anyone to participate in the program, however individuals will receive only one decal and one certificate per year at no charge. Guides can make unlimited applications for their clients using the angler application below, but every angler will receive only one free decal and certificate a year. For any angler to receive additional decals and certificates a $10 contribution using pay pal on our donate page is required for each fish submitted.

Membership Requirements

The minimum size for membership in the RBC is 36” total length. This is largely an honor system, though either a photograph of the fish or the name of a witness is required with the application. If a picture is supplied with the application we will publish it next to the name of the club member. The fish must be released alive and either left in the water or held out only very briefly for the picture. These are the only rules.
All angler names will be listed on the individual angler page even if fishing with a guide. The name of the guide will be listed next to the angler, though if the application is submitted by a guide or if the angler lists a guide in his/her application.

Applications

Below are links to our application forms where you will also be able to upload your image. Please send all questions to: rbc@stripersforever.org
ANGLER APPLICATION (Angler application is used for all fish applications whether made by angler or guide)
GUIDE APPLICATION (This application is just for guides to register for the program. Guides should register in advance of submitting a fish application)

Rewards

  • Anglers who release a breeder will also receive this certificate:
Stripers4EVERreleaseCertFINAL4x8FLAT

  • All individual anglers will be automatically be entered (1) time into a year-end drawing (December 2014) for a prize of fly or conventional tackle or a guided trip. All prizes are currently TBD. The number of drawings will be based on the number of prizes we have donated to us. Each member can only win one prize. The number of prizes and number of drawings is subject to change

Maine Deep Sea Fishing & Light Tackle Report with Super Fly Charters: April 1st, 2014

Nearshore Light Tackle Cod Trips: Bath, Maine!!!

If you plan to be in the area in May and want to get out on the water…Our light tackle inshore cod fishing trip is definitely something to consider!!!
a10In addition to the Striped Bass trips that we offer…We also offer bottom fishing trips to target Cod. Now when most folks think of Cod fishing, they think of long rides to the fishing grounds, aboard a crowded boat, fishing with broomstick tackle and super heavy jigs, epic tangles etc…..Well here at Super Fly Charters we have re-defined the art of Cod fishing with light tackle!!!…Located just off the coast of Maine lie some very productive fishing grounds. Shoals,  ledges, rocky pinnacles and steep drop-offs provide great habitat for Cod, Pollock and other bottom dwellers. We have spent a lifetime learning which areas are the most effective and we have scaled our tackle down to provide the most sport. 67789_1462147957612_3456186_nThe majority of these trips involve the use of very lightweight & sensitive spinning tackle that we spool with ultra thin braided fishing line so you can feel every thump. This tackle allows us to use much lighter weight jigs even in heavy current. Most anglers that choose this trip often combine it with one of my Striped Bass trips as a way to throw some tasty fillets on ice!! This trip is also very popular with families as it provides a great variety of bottom fish species and fast action…These trips are available to start at the beginning of May and run through the end of October!! If you feel the need to get in on some saltwater fishing before the Stripers arrive please get in touch with us for available dates. Maine Striper Fishing Gear Report with Super Fly Charters: March 26th, 2014

Here at Super Fly Charters, we believe that choosing the right equipment is essential in helping us provide our customers with a great experience. Every piece of tackle, rods, reels and clothing are carefully considered. I have been using Simms products for the last 15 years and have always relied on fly shops & other retailers for my purchases. This year I have decided to go direct to the source and have been accepted into the Simms Pro Program...What this will allow me to do is use a greater selection of Simms outerwear, wading equipment and tackle storage systems...Those of you out there who are already using Simms gear already know how great it is!! For those in the market for waders or outerwear, please do yourself a huge favor and visit your local retailer to check out this amazing...Simms products are simply some of the best on the planet!! Read  the bio below to learn a little about the history of this great company!! Also follow this link to find the nearest Simms retailers

Simms is a brand founded on the pillars of innovation. It was the brainchild of visionary angler John Simms who saw a need to develop better waders and accessories than what was then available on the market. That quest led to the development of Simms Fishing Products in 1980. During that era, Simms was one of the first companies worldwide to introduce neoprene waders, which provided enhanced warmth and waterproofing armor for serious anglers pushing the limits of their fishing pursuits. The brand continued to progress under the Jackson-based Life-Link International banner through the ’80s. But it took a giant leap in 1993, when current owner, K.C. Walsh, a passionate angler and entrepreneur, acquired the company and relocated it to Bozeman. Walsh grew up in a flyfishing family and it was his life-long dream to live, and work, and play in Montana. Under Walsh’s leadership, Simms introduced breathable waders in a trailblazing partnership with W.L. Gore & Associates (makers of GORE-TEX® fabric). That seismic shift breathed new life into wader innovation and has since powered the sport to new levels of comfort and performance. Today Simms continues to mature as a brand with a trained eye on fisheries conservation and inspired product development over a wide swath of technical apparel offerings—from state-of-the art sun protection and wind-blocking outerwear to pioneering CleanStream™ footwear technologies. What remains unswerving, however, is Simms’s commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing and business ideals. When Simms relocated headquarters in 2012, it cemented its Bozeman roots with a new 60,000-square-foot facility housing corporate headquarters, warehouses, and its production plant. This 15,000 square-foot expansion provides elbowroom to drive product evolution in a more efficient and effective manner. It also solidifies Simms as the sole fishing wader manufacturer in the country. Simms currently staffs nearly 120 locally based employees and is a recognized Montana economic ambassador and community contributor. Although Simms continues to strive for new heights its vision—that stems back to that misty Jackson morning and reverberates through the halls of its new Bozeman stronghold—remains the same: To produce the highest quality products to keep you protected from the elements in any and all fishing conditions.

Maine Saltwater Guided Mothership Wade Fishing Trips With Super Fly Charters

Hey Everyone!!! With both of the kids now in daycare, I'm slowly but surely getting caught up on the stuff that I want to share with you guys...For many of you...it's nothing new, you've been hopping out of the boat with me for years. This year I'm taking these trips to a whole new level & I want to bring you all up to speed on this. We'll have some new specialized equipment to make the wade fishing more efficient Most of the details are described below but if you want more info pick up the phone and give us a call on the Maine Striper Fishing Hotline!!!

Guided Mothership Wading Trips

(a fly angler stalking the edge of a sandbar and finding great success where hungry Stripers were staging at low tide)
wade
photoIf you are feeling adventurous or are just looking for more advanced, surf or wade,  fly & light tackle opportunities then you should experience one of Capt George’s boat/wade fishing combo trips where we use the boat as a mothership to access some  of the most incredible saltwater wade fishing  habitat on the Maine Coast, most of which is only accessible by boat !!! The area that we fish has  many sprawling  hard bottom tidal flats that are bathed in crystal clear ocean waters. Wading the leading edge of a flooding tide can yield some spectacular catches from knee deep water…The same can be said of fishing the edges of flats that have drained off...Even the stealthiest boat will only give you a limited shots at fish and will often spook skinny water stripers out of range or into into deepwater… but a careful wade fishermen can more effectively creep up on wary fish !!! Bring your own waders (Recommended)  or brave the elements and wet wade. Even though the water warms up in July & August waders are a huge benefit for extended wading sessions. This trip option can be tailored specifically for fly or light tackle wade fishermen. Having our boat, the “Super Fly”, to serve as our mothership has huge benefits over our land based  surf fishing trips…The first and biggest benefit is mobility…being able to chase the tides efficiently is critical to success and with Maine’s jagged coastline a boat offers the fastest transport when hopping the peninsula’s and little time is lost. Other benefits include the ability to carry a virtual bait and tackle shop of gear with you!!! The last benefit  is that the boat ride to and from the prime wading areas covers some of the most productive striper grounds in the midcoast region….it’s not unusual to be “interrupted” by hungry schools of blitzing Stripers or Bluefish on the way to you wade fishing spots!!!

I also want to let you know that once the season gets underway we'll be posting a daily dockside video trip report from the Kennebec Tavern on our FB social media page...It's going to be really cool...so make sure you head on over there and give our Super Fly Charters Facebook Page a like!!
