Maine Striper Fishing Kennebec Report: June 10th, 2012
I had Chris Oliver Back aboard this morning for some red hot action catching schoolie Striped Bass on the lower Kennebec River...Over the last 8-9years, Chris has caught his first Maine Stripers of the year aboard my Boat...For this session We were underway well before 5am and were hooked up with our first Stripers within 5 minutes of leaving the dock in Bath. Small olive clousers were just what the fish were looking for as were small white bucktails. What the Stripers lacked in size today more than made up for themselves in numbers and spunky attitude!!! (That's right Dennis Kelly...get your tags ready!!!) It was nice to see the Striper fishing rebound so quickly on the the Kennebec after last weeks flooding & blowout conditions, the last half of the out going tides have been turning the Kennebec into a silty mess as their is still alot of flood debris that hasn't cleared out...however the flood tides have been bringing in nice cool clean ocean water and that has been just the ticket...lots of easy stupid fish around right now.. I bet a week of dry weather and the river will be fishing much better for both flood & ebb tides...We have amazing amounts Sandeels, Juvie Herring, Mackerel & Alewives are spread out over a wide range of habitat...Those crunchy little green crabs are already marching in mass over much of the oceanside & bayside flats..Squid have also arrived in big numbers so the table is well set and the fish are eating So lets get ready for a great season of fishing off the Kennebec & Casco Bay regions...Also some good reports are indicating stripers may be pushing as far east as Penobscot bay this season!! Quick rebound is right, much faster than the Hurricane Helen fiasco. We'll have to start testing the bumps soon as the larger fish move in. This should be the week...
That hurricane sure was one mean bitch of a fiasco...but it was also a bit of a blessing because it sort of forced us to explore the less familiar waters to the west ;-) And yes I too think that this is the week that the jumbo stripers will start to stack up on the bumps
