Maine Saltwater Fishing Charters, Guided Trips & Reports 2010: Super Fly Charters

October 24th, 2010 trip report. After a long, productive and very fun season, the Striped Bass have all but left Maine waters...But hey...that doesn't have to mean that our saltwater fishing season has to end...Case in point was our groundfishing trip yesterday. Chris Oliver & John Coppola met me at the dock at 6:30 am...the air temp was chilly, in the low 30's, but we were dressed for the conditions....After going through my safety check list, We cast off our lines, left the dock and blasted down the St. George river at a brisk 30knot clip...we soon cleared the mouth of the river and left the Georges islands behind us as we headed across Muscongus Bay on flat ass calm seas, bound for some ledges ESE of Monhegan island. After a 30 minute run from the dock we arrived on the numbers and got set to drop our jigs into the depths below us...Chris was armed with a Shimano Stella , Trevala butterfly jigging combo as well as an Avet lever drag reel on a butterfly jigging rod...attached to his leaders were Williamson vortex jig and teaser rig...John was set up with a Shimano Stradic , Trevala butterfly jigging combo...John was using the standard  diamond jig with teaser rig...My rig was a Daiwa Saltiga conventional reel mounted to a nomad travel rod with a diamond jig teaser rig...All the tackle that we used is not the traditional broomstick gear commonly associated with bottom fishing, rather we use very sensitive & lightweight yet extremely powerful graphite rods that are a joy to use for hours on end...the ultrathin braided superlines loaded on our high speed reels allow us to feel the lightest of bites even in depths of several hundred feet!!!...Our first drop was in about 90 feet of water...As soon as our jigs hit bottom they are hammered immediately and all three of our rods are thumping with the weight of nice fat 8-10 pound keeper sized cod...This action would continue for several hours as we methodically worked the structure below...often our jigs would get nailed on the drop so it was important to keep a watchful eye on the line as the jigs rocketed toward the bottom...if the line stopped moving, it was because a cod had slammed the jig on the fall...when this happened, we quickly engage the drag and set the hook on the fish...most of our strikes came on the jig itself but many hits were on the teaser, we even had some doubles where we caught cod on both the jig and teaser. Along with the dozens of cod that we caught we also caught Pollock, Acadian Redfish and a few other rockfish species...At the end of the day everyone went home with some nice filet's and some sore arms to show for it

2010 Maine Saltwater Fishing Reports With Capt. George Harris & Super Fly Charters

Our saltwater fishing season is just about over...sure...we've still got a handful Striper trips to do...and weather permitting, some groundfish trips for Cod. A couple of more weeks and the boat will be under cover and most of the tackle put away...I still plan to offer some fly & light tackle "sea run" Brown Trout trips on some of midcoast Maine's tidal estuaries...also we'll be targeting the fall open water smelt runs that occur in many of the tidal creeks and estuaries...this is a fun fishery that not many anglers participate in...Smelt are not considered to be a great sportfish however they are great eats on the table and taking part in this non-traditional activity is a great way to spend time in the outdoors

The hits just keep on coming...whether it's Kennebec stripers or offshore groundfish...Super Fly has 'em dialed in!!

10/12/10- Another great day of Striper fishing on the Kennebec...Tom & Renee from Arizona joined me for the day as they made a pitstop in Bath during their tour up the Maine coast....for Renee it was all about the foliage, the lobsterboats, the lighthouses and the wildlife....for Tom it was simply all about the Striped Bass....and we found plenty of everything for both of them to enjoy!!!
10/11/10- Spent another morning with the Baur brothers from Kansas City, Missouri...A few days ago Bruce & Kyle spent the day bashing Striped Bass on the Kennebec river...today we headed ESE of Monhegan in pursuit of groundfish...as soon as our butterfly jigs hit bottom we were instantly hooked up with a pair of keeper cod...this continued for a few hours as cod after cod slammed our jigs!!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report: Super Fly Charters 10/10/10

What do a couple of fishing guides do on their day off?...they go fishing of course!!!



Yesterday I was left without a charter due to extremely windy conditions...after a brief chat with fellow guide Capt. Dan Wolotsky of Sweet Action Charters I was invited to join him and his crew of Matt & Mark....Dan & his crew blacked out the livewell with striper crack before picking me up at the public dock in Bath...A short run led us to a stretch of river where I had some good success the day before. Conditions were not ideal...we were greeted by a screaming NW wind that was blowing directly into a ripping incoming tide...a scenario that makes it almost impossible to get into a good drift pattern...we made the best of the situation by power drifting into the wind...a drift or two later & we were tight to the first fish, a fat 28 incher...a drift or two later and Matt & Mark were hooked up with a double header, one of which came unbuttoned. A few drifts later Capt. Dan is hooked up with a fat fish which he boats in short order...we continued to battle the wind and tide and managed to stick another keeper fish in the cooler...Eventually everyone had their fill and Capt Dan & his crew had to head back to Boothbay Harbor...another great day on the water. Capt. Dan and I saw lots of each other this summer as we both fish alot of the same waters and share lots of info...but this was the first day we've actually been able to fish together...Capt. Dan Wolotsky is one of the hardest working and most professional guides on the Maine coast...Capt. Dan specializes in livebait Striper fishing and putting smiles on his clients faces...everyone who fishes with Dan loves his laid back attitude and his uncanny ability to sniff out fish even under the toughest conditions...yeah he's one fishy dude!!!

Maine's Kennebec is still fishing very well

Striped Bass are still dropping down into the lower Kennebec in solid numbers...we hit them hard today during the incoming tide. Fat healthy stripers crushed our baits with reckless abandon. We should continue to see good numbers of Striped Bass for another two weeks...I'm planning on being out there...are you?

Maine Striper Fishing Super Fly Charters; Kennebec River Report: October 4th 2010

Maine Striper Fishing Continues Into October
The Striper fishing here in midcoast Maine remains strong...We've been seeing good numbers of fish on the Kennebec river. Loads of bait is dropping downriver and hungry Striped Bass are lining up on the ledges to gorge. Huge schools of spike mackerel continue to roam just offshore...juvenile herring are dumping out of the Major rivers in huge schools....couple this with very warm water temps and it sets the stage for a couple of more weeks of great fishing...Most of the fish we're seeing are on the plus side of 30 inches, which makes for great sport on fly and like tackle. The morning runs have been chilly...we're no longer in hawaiian shorts and flip flops as we blast down the river in the mornings. The leaves have started to change to brilliant fall colors providing some spectacular scenery and making for some great back drops for big fish photo ops.

We recently participated in the 2010 Kennebec Pro-Am Benefit Fly Fishing Tournament...the tourney fleet faced some tough conditions including a long slack tide period but "Team Super-Fly" captained by myself and anglers Jan Leth & Mark Davis managed to take home top honors...angler Mark Davis caught the winning fish with a mere 15 minutes to go before the tourny ended...a fatty 28 incher caught by dredging a 6 inch black snakefly in about 15 feet of water over rocky bottom structure.

Maine Striper Fishing Report Super Fly Charters; Kennebec River 9/14/2010

Fall Run Striper Madness Begins

The past week of fishing on Maine's Kennebec river has ranged from very good to downright phenomenal...today was one of those days that I would classify as being phenomenal.
Big stripers are now finally starting to become active as the water temps slowly cool back down into the Stripers comfort range...Huge clouds of sandeels can be found out on the oceanfront sandflats and spike mackerel are swarming the coastline in untold numbers....ad to this mix juvenile alewives and peanut bunker and you come up with a recipe that sets the table for the fall run of stripers to begin...So far we have not seen the true beginning of the southerly push of migrating stripers but what we have found is that the Striped bass have begun to gorge in preparation of their long Journey south...Water temps are still very warm which means that we'll probably see great fishing well into Otober!!!

Maine Striper Fishing: Kennebec River Sept 11th, 2010

Striper Fishing On Maine's Kennebec River Is In Full Swing

Over the course of the last week...we have seen dramatic improvements in the Striped Bass fishery in the midcoast region. Dropping water temps have sparked some tremendous fishing opportunities. Time of day has not mattered as much as tidal movement. We have been seeing some great action fishing fast water moving over structure...We've also been seeing some sporadic blitz activity. Fly fish along the edges of the flats has been working. Tons of bait and nice stable weather will keep the Stripers feeding in the kennebec river system for another 5 weeks before we have to start chasing them south. I have some awesome tides available next week...so give us a call to take advantage of the best fishing of the season!!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report: Kennebec River, September 2nd, 2010

Maine Saltwater Fishing Heats Up In September

September is upon us and that means one thing...FALL RUN STRIPERS!!! yeah thats right cooling water temps will put the stripers into overdrive over the next 5-6 weeks...we should see some pretty spectacular fishing as stripers, bluefish and tuna begin to gorge on the huge schools of baitfish...this morning on a crystal clear oceanside sand flat...we got into a school of jumbo stripers feeding on tiny sandeeels in about 2 feet of water...after the stripers moved on the Bluefish moved in in huge schools ravaging the flats in wolfpack formation...we'd see them finning acrossed the shallows, cast our flies and plugs into the schools...the result...huge boils and a burning drag....life is good!!!

Maine Saltwater Fishing With Super Fly Charters August 12th, 2010 Report

This past week has seen some up's and downs in the fishing conditions in the Kennebec region. Warm water in the river has kept the stripers holding on deeper water structure...while out on the oceanside flats we've had some success fishing for Striped Bass during the incoming tides that flood the shallow sand flats and marshy areas with cool clear water.
Bluefish remain active and we've been able to get in on some sporadic but very exciting blitzes...topwater plugs draw plenty of awesome strikes and swimming plugs get slammed when pitched into a surface feed.
Reports indicate that juvenile alewives have begun their descent down the rivers and will soon be making their way through the estuaries...this should provoke some excellent fishing that'll last into the fall run season. Offshore...football bluefin tuna reports indicate spotty action....I have been so busy doing striped bass charters that I haven't been able get out to pursue those powerful and elusive speedsters...I have some Tuna trips coming up soon so hopefully I'll have some good news to report.
