Maine Striper Fishing Report October 12th, 2012

Yesterday morning I had Dennis Kelly back aboard for another tagging session...Joining him were "ringers" Ray Paradis from Arrowsic & the Scarborough crew of Mike Giroux and Capt. Ben Gardner (Kristin K Charters)...We had a screeching WNW wind to contend with which made getting good drifts nearly impossible...that said we still managed to put 40+/- fish in the boat...In four trips to maine this season Dennis has tagged approx 160 Stripers and this trip put him over 13500 for his career!!! Still some really good fishing left but don't wait...it's going to be over soon!!

Maine Striper Fishing Reports October 6th, 2012

The Striped bass fishing continues to be very strong on the Kennebec watershed...This morning we fished the outgoing tide and as soon as the tide started to rip the Stripers smashed our jigs over and over again...We still have ideal water temps and vast schools of baitfish anchoring our stripers in place so don't hang the rods up just yet...PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH US ASAP TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HOTTEST ACTION OF THE SEASON!!!

The fishing on the Kennebec continues to rage on into the fall...every day we are putting big numbers of fish in the boat especially during peak tidal flows. Today I had Gary Eaton with his crew from Idexx back aboard the fishing did not dissappoint...right from the get go we jumped all over the stripers as soon as our jigs hit bottom they were getting slammed over and over again...I suspect this will continue for another 2-3 weeks before the fish move off to the south...We' are rolling right along and the rest of the week is filled with repeat clients starting with a double header tomorrow!!! Lots of fun times for those of us who have kept our heads in the game!!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report September 29th, 2012

We are quickly approaching October and we have the hammer down!!! Some exciting Striper fishing taking place right now on Maine's Kennebec river...The fishing is still at it's peak and we are pulling big numbers of fish over the rail everyday that we are on the water. We have the Kennebec fishery dialed...Constant adjustments to our tackle and techniques have really allowed us to maximize our results and have given us a huge advantage over the one trick ponies... We still have some great tides available...Don't miss out on the ACTION!!!

Maine Striper Report September 26th, 2012

As I said in the previous post...THE FUSE HAS BEEN LIT!!! The fall Striped Bass run is in full swing and we are putting some jaw dropping numbers of fish in the boat, fishing both tides. The Kennebec is chocked full of young of the year herring and hungry stripers are staging in all their old haunts and are now in full on gorge mode...We have perfected and improved upon an old school style of fishing and modified it for the light tackle fisherman and our specific fishery...This exciting, interactive technique is absolutely without equal and for us, has breathed new life into targeting the fall run fishery...The bottom line is that we are seeing some of the best, most dependable fishing of the season right now...C'mon out to take advantage of it...

Maine Striper Fishing Report September 20th, 2012

(Broken record..Blah, Blah, Blah..Another Ray Paradis & Super Fly Striped Bass slay session)

Wow...Mother Nature has really lit the fuse on the powder keg...Another great day of Striper fishing on the Kennebec....Today Ray Paradis & I had a A 50 fish day to complement the 80 fish day that we had with Dennis Kelly earlier this week!! Ocean bright Stripers are pouring into the Kennebec to gorge on juvie herring in preparation for the fall migration...Both tides have been fish very well in areas of heavy current washing over bottom structure. A properly presented jig will get demolished everytime through the strike zone...the next 3 weeks should provide some unreal fishing for light tackle anglers...Very exciting times right now!!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report September 17th, 2012

(Dennis & Ray with a stack of 80 tagging data cards...WOW!!)
The fishing in the Kennebec is very good right now...actually that might be a bit of an understatement!! Striped Bass tagging GURU, Dennis Kelly from Sag Harbor NY was back abaoard today, joining us was Ray Paradis...both have fished with me several times..We departed the dock just before sunrise and went straight for a spot that has been a great producer during both tides...it took us a few drifts to get dialed in but we were soon into the stripers pretty steadily...as the tide slacked and began its flood stage we jumped from spot to spot scoring a few fish at each spot...as the tide really began to rip we stopped at a spot that I had prospected a few days ago with great luck...this stop would be different....the first drop of the jigs were slammed immediately and we had 3 fish on deck awaiting tag & release while Ray & I dropped our jigs back down and they were immediately crushed by hungry stripers...drift after drift resulted in immediate double hook ups and a frantic tagging pace...when the dust cleared we had tagged 80 stripers and had well over 90 hook ups...A tremendous day on the water that pushed Dennis's career tag count to over 13,400 fish. Thanks Again Dennis!!! And a special thanks to Ray who served as back up capt, mate and fish slayer...we would not have been able to tag that many with out you!!!

Maine Striper Reports September 16th, 2012

The fishing is really starting to go bonkers on The Kennebec...The Stripers are feeding heavily on juvie herring out in the in the rips during both tides no matter what time of day...the feedbag is on!! The beaches are producing bigger fish but in less numbers than in the river...Give me a call NOW to get in on the action!!

Maine Striper Fishing September 14th, 2012

Great day on the water today...tons of schoolies can be had if you fish the right spots at the right tides...and while this kind of fishing is fun it is not what drives me...searching out the bigger more challenging stripers in pristine, uncrowded settings is why people come to fish with me year after...Most days we get some mogan fish other days we dont but we are always in front of solid fish and the opportunity is always there...Today was one of those days, starting out in shallow water trying to turn some monsters and took our shots at some beasts and even boated a nice 28-30 inch fish...after that we played pac-man on the ledges with little schoolies that make you feel good but require very little skill or patience!!!...both styles are amazingly gratifying when the end result is a tug on the end of your line...come find out for yourself!!!

One really cool thing that has happened this week has been the arrival of Atlantic Bonito into Maine waters...these have been the the Juvenile versions not the big line screaming versions but any Bonito caught in midcoast Maine is big news and two days in a row we have gotten into small schools of them while, out on the eastern edge of Casco Bay, loading up the livewells with macks for striper bait...pretty cool stuff to see here in Maine and it just goes to prove that their are no fences out on the big ocean!!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report September 8th, 2012

With bouncy weather that we've had the last few days and the weather that's forecasted ahead of us making the oceanfront habitat unfishable due to heavy surf conditions, I've really had to rely heavily on my knowledge of fishing our extensive back bay and shallow water flats areas to give my anglers some very good shots at some impressive fish...Today was a prime example...Regulars Chris & Joe Oliver were aboard again and with them was, marine electronics specialist, Kevin Boughton we hopped aboard the boat this morning and made a beeline for a shallow back bay flat that had a fast ebbing tide...this particular flat is known to produce some of the biggest fish that I catch each season...the tide was not perfect but it was good enough to try...Over the course of an hr we hooked up a few nice fish but each fish managed to shake the hook...Each fish was 30 seconds of line burning adrenline that signals a BIG FISH on the line followed by slack line & dead silence..part of the game I guess...with the tidal flow waning and the seas & wind building we decided to turn the boat back up the river to hit another draining mudflat...a few small bluefish were pushing bait but it really didnt have that fishy feel not to mention we were staight into the teeth of a ripping wind...so off we went again on the hunt it didnt take long to find what we were looking for....dive bombing terns and screaming gulls marked the spot...quick casts with jigs and plugs and all 3 of my anglers were tight to hard fighting bluefish...cast after cast was met with the same result...a torqued over rod and a burning drag....when the fish were up top feeding on juvie herring we got the explosive surface strikes...when the blues went deep I used my sounder to mark them and we dropped jigs into them...we even boated a striper during that melee and had one fish freight train us and took the reel right down to the spool knot before breaking us off...good times!!!

Maine Striper Fishing September 6th, 2012

Fished with Ray Paradis today...Ray has a masters degree in live bait fishing and is working on a Phd..We left the dock at the Kennebec tavern at around 10am and cruised downriver into sheepscot bay without a real plan except to try to score some live macks for baiting up some stripers...hitting our usual bait spot we picked up a couple dozen macks and ran west across a lumpy sea that was breaking big time on the shoals and ledges...approaching the mouth of the Kennebec we made the wise decision not to push further west but instead hit up one of the shallow back bay spots that usually has some decent action with broad shouldered 30" class stripers...we were a little early but we snaked our way in and got our baits set up...It didn't take long before our baits started getting slammed by chunky stripers...We had to pull the anchor and chase down one hard charging fish that burned off a big run of line and managed to wrap us around a mooring ball berore charging out across a shallow flat...with some skillful boat handling and a little bit of luck we managed to clear the line and boated the mid 30" fish to put the exclamation point on one of many great trips that Ray & I have had over the last few years !!! Maine Striper Fishing Report September 5th,2012

Yesterday I had avid anglers Scott & Judy Francisco aboard for a day of Striper fishing...we had some tough weather approaching so the window to get on some big Stripers off the beach was slim...the first stop was in sheepscot bay to load the livewell with macks then we swund the boat to the west and headed for some of my spots that have been producing some solid fish...For first time Striper fishermen Judy & Scott did a great job as we battled tough weather to get to the prime spots!!! We have some bouncy weather ahead for the next several days so it looks like we'll be fishing inside the river...the fish should really start to school up on the ledges in the river for the next several weeks and we'll be there to take advantage of some hot action that will last into mid october!!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report September 1st, 2012

Jim & Doug from Tennessee joined me this morning for a morning of Striper fishing...Departing from the Kennebec Tavern in Bath we cruised down river and out to some ledges to load the livewell with macks...with that mission taken care of we went to work on the Stripers...once we figured out which presentation the fish wanted we boated numerous beautiful Striped Bass...all pulled from extremely shallow water

Maine Striper Fishing Report August 30th, 2012

Had a great crew aboard today...some west coasters looking to pull on some east coast fish with fly & light tackle gear...Started out the morning with a live bait run which exceeded the capacity of my livewell within 5 min...then off on the hunt for some shallow water stripers...once we arrived on the spot it didnt take long to find the fish but they were big lazy fish that needed to be hand fed...which my crew was happy to do...we boated several nice chunky stripers including an explosive double hook up that tested both the anglers and tackle...after the Stripers I made a beeline for the blues that have been lighting up the out going tide lately...we arrived to the party a little early but it didnt take long before we had wall to wall blues going beserk keeping my crew busy with single, double, triple and quad hook ups with fly and light tackle...eye popping surface feeds are a great way to end any trip...

Maine Striper Fishing August 24th, 2012

Yesterday I had Dennis Kelly back aboard to Tag some Striped Bass...We got started around 530am and ran down the river to the edge of a flat that has been holding a few decent fish...We worked the area for 10-15 minutes before noticing a blitz of bluefish up on the surface...we chased the birds around for an hour boating numerous blues and getting bit off several more times...After the blues disappeared we went on the hunt for stripers...they didnt come as easily as the blues but we ended up catching several nice solid fish that Dennis tagged & released...where will those fish end up??? hopefully on the end of your line very soon. Note: if you do happen to catch a tagged fish, please take the time to return the tag to the address thats printed on the tag...lots of valuable info is gained from these tagging studies

The Bluefish have arrived in the Kennebec which has made for some exciting fishing...The Bluefish have been ransacking every mackerel school for miles which has made for some interesting bait runs for our livebait Striped Bass trips....Today I had first time Striper angler Josiah Poole from Ct aboard...the bite was slow but he was persistant and was rewarded with a beautiful shallow water striped bass caught in gin clear water under bright sun...congrats Josiah for a great catch!!!

David Howard visiting Maine from Virginia on a quest to catch fish in all 50 states can now check the "vacationland" state off the list!! We left the marina dock in Bath at 5am this morning for a livebait striper trip...Catching bait was tough this morning most likely due to the arrival of the big schools of jumbo bluefish...The bait that we did catch was put to good use as David clobbered some hefty stripers in crystal clear shallow water to complete another great morning on the water!!!

Crazy catch on the sabiki!!Joe & Max also boated some Stripers too!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report August 1st, 2012

This morning I had a crew aboard that fishes with me a couple of times a year during this week in August...We left the Marina dock in Bath under the cover of darkness with a light rain falling and cruised downriver to a shallow flat that has been holding some fish....The first cast with a chugger drew a huge strike and hookup followed by a second hook up courtesy of a striper that annihilated sebile magic swimmer(that was a gift from my clients yesterday...thank you Steve!!) to complete the double header hookup...both fish were in the 30" range...a few more casts and we stowed the rods and headed out to fill the livewell with macks which we came to the boat quite easily...another short run with a blacked out live well and we were on some productive grounds where we had several violent bone jarring strikes but didnt get tight to a fish for one reason or another...after severeal swings & misses we decided that our luck WOULD change at the next spot, and it did, here we finished up the trip with style on some big fish smashing outr live macks in crystal clear shallow water!!!...yes the fishing is pretty good right now!!!
