Maine Striper Fishing

Just thought I'd share this comment, from a recent guest, on my Super Fly Charters Facebook page: First of all id like to apologize to Captain George for not writing sooner. What a truly amazing experience ! George's knowledge on his trade was absolutely amazing, he answered every question i asked and more. He really knows the habitat and feeding patterns of the striper (along with spawning migration patterns). His enthusiasm for the support was spectacular, every one who knows me knows how much i love to fish, he made me look tame in comparison! George will do everything in his power to guarantee you a catch. We started off the day catching one of the stripers favorite food, the mackerel. You should have seen the look on my wife's face when after the first cast, she pulled up a full string of six! And to top it all so much fun, his sense of humor and passion...amazing. ( Been a Brit that is a compliment our humor is weird lol). My only regret... I cant go fishing everyday!! So my advice to people, call George for a day of fishing you will never forget. -Rick Tyler CALL OR TEXT THE MAINE STRIPER FISHING HOTLINE FOR RESERVATIONS & THE MOST UP TO DATE REPORTS ON THE ENTIRE MAINE COAST 207-691-0745

Kennebec River Striper Report June 27th, 2012

(Day two with Daniel & Jim Roberts)
The report for today is a carbon copy of yesterday fishing except for less rain & more fish!!! Same crew aboard...Schoolie Striper warm up followed stalking by jumbo stripers in shallow water followed by more schoolie stripers followed by lunch at the Kennebec Tavern...tomorrow should be similiar action!!! I would like to add that having a kid aboard that can cast a weighted fly 90 feet to any position on the clock with his own hand tied furled 14' flouro leaders never hurts your chances when up on the flats and a jumbo striper shows itself!!!

Maine Striper Fishing Report June 26th, 2012

Part I: Daniel & Jim Roberts from Little Rock, Arkanas joined me for today for a day of Striper fishing and at times we battled through some torrential downpours that we didnt let slow us down...Daniel is an ace fly angler and works at the Ozark Angler in Little Rock...his casting is on point and his flies are funtional works of art. We started the morning at 5am and quickly landed on a pile of schoolie stripers to warm up his new Sage Xi3 9wt with during high water slack tide period...Catching Schoolie Stripers is a great way to start any morning & I suggest you all give it a try!!!...As the tide began to ebb we left the easy fish behind and went to work up on the flats sightcasting to big hungry stripers that were actively waking, finning and smashing baits on the surface...very fun stuff. At one point we were working a shallow flat that had some big active fish working the edge of the grass beds we eased up on them with the push pole, Daniel made a good cast to lead the fish and got rewarded with a spectacular shallow water eat...and after a short but tough fight brought a hefty 30+" bass to hand!! They'll be back aboard with me tomorrow morning for round II...Stay tuned!!!

Maine Striper Fishing: Super Fly Charters June 21st, 2012

Mid day trip today on a bright, hot sun...the stripers were sluggish as you would expect for mid day fishing but we found some nice fish feeding right in the surf zone in water most would not expect to find them....There are definitely alot of stripers around and they are spread out over a wide range of habitat...In the river, the marshes, open beach fronts, creeks, flats...you name it & we have probably caught stripers on that type of terrain this season and we've done it using a wide range of techniques!!! I'm back at it early tomorrow morning and will post a report on what we find...Please stay tuned.

Maine Striper Fishing Charters Hotline 207-691-0745

(The Lee family from Michigan with one of severel triple hookups)

Family & Kids saltwater fishing trips...I'm taking a break from hardcore Striper fishing trips the next day or two to guide some families with young children for some "catch anything with fins" trips...I really enjoy guiding families and it's one of the things i've come to love the most about being a guide, even much more so now that I have a little boy of my own!!! Over the last 10 years or so I have seen some very young anglers grow into tremendous fly & light tackle fishermen and I'd like to think that I helped to play a small role in that development. Starting kids off on the right track with easy to catch species like Mackerel, Pollock & bottom fish is an important step in developing a childs interest in sportfishing and it is a great memory builder for families. Once the youngsters master the easy fish we slowly start integrating more challenging fish species like Striped Bass and Bluefish using more specialized techniques...The kids & parents have a blast on these trips and so do I!!!

Maine Striper Report

This is actually more of a statement than a report...I am sooo looking forward to running up the Kennebec with my livewells blacked out with spike macks on July 1st...I Would not want to be a Striped Bass on that day, nor would I care to be a Mackerel for that matter!!...That is all that needs to be said...HAPPY FATHERS DAY EVERYONE!!!

Maine Striper Fishing: Kennebec River Slayfest!!

Well..we've had some bouncy weater weather this month and except for a noreaster a week or so ago...we haven't slowed down at all. This morning, I had an enthusiastic crew aboard who didn't mind fishing in sideways rain, In search of the wonderful ailment called "Striper Thumb" we departed the Kennebec Tavern Marina at 5am to catch the last of the incoming tide..Haha..For some strange reason it took us a little while(15-20min)to get into a groove, but when we found what we were looking for it was game on with non stop action!!! The big story this season has been the invasion of little schoolie Stripers...That's right we've been enjoying some red hot action on schoolie Stripers!!! They are a blast on fly & light tackle and are so much fun to watch them do cartwheels and headstands as they smash through herring schools...These smaller fish that have been noticably absent for several years...Although we all like catching big trophy stripers these little guys are extremely important to our resource and I'm thrilled that they are once again migrating along much of the Maine coast. Another reminder to crush those barbs down when you encounter one of these large schools of striped bass the action is hot and it just makes sense to take it easy on the fish you plan to release anyway...As usual stay tuned for more action from the mighty Kennebec and adjacent areas!!

Maine Striper Fishing Kennebec Report: June 10th, 2012

I had Chris Oliver Back aboard this morning for some red hot action catching schoolie Striped Bass on the lower Kennebec River...Over the last 8-9years, Chris has caught his first Maine Stripers of the year aboard my Boat...For this session We were underway well before 5am and were hooked up with our first Stripers within 5 minutes of leaving the dock in Bath. Small olive clousers were just what the fish were looking for as were small white bucktails. What the Stripers lacked in size today more than made up for themselves in numbers and spunky attitude!!! (That's right Dennis Kelly...get your tags ready!!!) It was nice to see the Striper fishing rebound so quickly on the the Kennebec after last weeks flooding & blowout conditions, the last half of the out going tides have been turning the Kennebec into a silty mess as their is still alot of flood debris that hasn't cleared out...however the flood tides have been bringing in nice cool clean ocean water and that has been just the ticket...lots of easy stupid fish around right now.. I bet a week of dry weather and the river will be fishing much better for both flood & ebb tides...We have amazing amounts Sandeels, Juvie Herring, Mackerel & Alewives are spread out over a wide range of habitat...Those crunchy little green crabs are already marching in mass over much of the oceanside & bayside flats..Squid have also arrived in big numbers so the table is well set and the fish are eating So lets get ready for a great season of fishing off the Kennebec & Casco Bay regions...Also some good reports are indicating stripers may be pushing as far east as Penobscot bay this season!!

Midcoast Maine Striper Report June 2012

The slow moving storm that dumped 7-8 inches of rain over much of the coast of Maine has moved on...Left in it's wake are swollen rivers and silted up bays from all the runoff...Prior to the storm we enjoyed some red hot action and I suspect after several days the rivers and bays will flush themselves out and the fishing will return to normal. Today I hopped in the boat and went on tour with a couple of rods at the ready...Starting in Bath at the Kennebec Tavern I headed downriver into the Sasanoa in search of cleaner water, I did not find any there so I pushed across Hockomock Bay into Sheepscot Bay where I found considerably cleaner water and loads of herring and macks, As I made my way out of sheepscot bay I headed for the surfline at Reid State Park...more clean fishable water, the closer I got to the mouth of the Kennebec I started to run into a plume of brown water that was directly related to stormwater runoff. Tomorrow I will continue to scout, this time west of the Kennebec into outer Casco Bay....I'm pretty sure that I'll find clean water and most likely, hungry Stripers mopping up juvie Herring and Mackerel...please stay tuned!!!

On another note: I just receiverd this email from a party that I guided last month....It was a terrific day on the water and it goes to show you why Super Fly Charters was a Portland Press Herald 2011 "People Choice" award winner: George, Thanks for working with us to provide a wonderful fishing trip to Maine. My Dad is still talking about seeing all those Striped Bass jumping on the surface and being able to hook into some of them. You worked hard for us, and we appreciate it! If you want to send some of the pictures and video that you took of the trip I will pass them on to Craig and Angie. Thank You, Mark Behrends
