Maine Striper Fishing Report May 2013

Hello everyone!! The big news for us this week is that we are officially open for business for the 2013 season. Yesterday after about 2weeks of working on the boat, we splashed the boat and she is now sitting comfortably in her slip at the Kennebec Tavern Restaurant & Marina located in Bath. Now for the fishing!! Striped Bass have begun migrating into Maine waters, with anglers in Southern Maine seeing the best action. Early season fishing is extremely tide sensitive and we seem to have our best success in the rivers and shallow estuaries around well known herring runs. One of my favorite techniques early on is to work the edges of the flats during dropping tides. Striped Bass tend to hang along these edges feeding on herring, shrimp, crabs on other small baits as they are washed off the flats by our powerful tides. The reason that I focus on fishing these flats and edges is that when the tide rolls in over these shallow water dark bottom mudflats is that the water warms up much more quickly. The water temp might only be 2-3 degrees warmer up on the flats but it can also be as much as 5-7 degrees warmer!!! In my opinion this warmer water draining off the flats and out of the creeks will give the Stripers a metabolic charge which makes them much more active in their feeding habits. Working the river bank structure around current seams is also highly productive...For the light tackle fishermen Soft plastic swimbaits, bucktail jigs, and topwater plugs score the most fish early on. Fly fishermen will do very well casting fast sink shooting heads & intermediate sink lines using a variety of baitfish imitations such as leftys deceiver or clouser minnows. For anglers fishing outside of the Kennebec Special regs area...a live lined Herring or Mackerel is nearly impossible to beat and accounts for some of the biggest fish caught each season!! For those of you who follow this blog and tune in regularly for reports, rest assured, that once the fishing heats up, I will be posting reports, daily & weekly. Also as in the past, for the folks that request them, I will be giving live reports via text message and also on my facebook pages. Really looking forward to the season and I'm looking forward to seeing many of you again this year!!
