Nearshore Light Tackle Cod Trips: Bath, Maine!!!

In addition to the Striped Bass trips that we offer…We also offer bottom fishing trips to target Cod. Now when most folks think of Cod fishing, they think of long rides to the fishing grounds, aboard a crowded boat, fishing with broomstick tackle and super heavy jigs, epic tangles etc…..Well here at Super Fly Charters we have re-defined the art of Cod fishing with light tackle!!!…Located just off the coast of Maine lie some very productive fishing grounds. Shoals,  ledges, rocky pinnacles and steep drop-offs provide great habitat for Cod, Pollock and other bottom dwellers. We have spent a lifetime learning which areas are the most effective and we have scaled our tackle down to provide the most sport. The majority of these trips involve the use of very lightweight & sensitive spinning tackle that we spool with ultra thin braided fishing line so you can feel every thump. This tackle allows us to use much lighter weight jigs even in heavy current. Most anglers that choose this trip often combine it with one of my Striped Bass trips as a way to throw some tasty fillets on ice!! This trip is also very popular with families as it provides a great variety of bottom fish species and fast action…These trips are available to start at the beginning of May and run through the end of October!! Maine Striper fishing report 7/10/08

We've been finding some nice Stripers early in the morning and late evenings around sundown...By taking our time and really working an area we've caught some nice fish over 30 inches. Typical run & gun style fishing has not been overly effective...finding schools of fish and working them has been key. The stripers on the flats seem to be feeding heavily on shrimp & crabs...keep that in mind while out fishing...we're not seeing the big blitzes when the Bass are feeding on Herring...finesse fishing is the name of the game.

Bluefin Tuna fishing is starting to pick up locally, especially on the bigger fish. The little 50-100 pound fish should be making their annual appearance any day now. Reports show that several Giant Tuna have been taken by the commercial fleet.

Ravenous alligator sized Bluefish are set to invade the mid-coast region...I've already had several of the "yellow eyed demons" in the boat...it's time to break out the wire leaders!!!

We've also done a few more of the Kids "Mackeral Mayhem" trips...I just cannot believe how much fun we have had on these trips!!!I have received several call from parents telling me that the kids are still bragging about all the fish they caught!!!

Maine Striped Bass fishing report

A happy Detective Robert Smith from Texas with his first ever Striped Bass, caught 6/22/08 using a black sluggo on ultra light tackle("Evening Blitz Trip")A "fish story" that is sure to grow by the time he gets home to Texas!!!

Early Morning's & late evening trips have been critical in producing fish for us. As we continue to experience some slower than normal fishing, I have switched gears and instead of stubbornly tossing flies & artificials, have begun using live herring & chunking techniques more commonly used during the heat of mid season. The switch has paid off. While we havn't landed any really big stripers this season, we are still catching. Of course we continue to cast our flies and artificials & pick off fish here & there. The good news is that Big schools of striped Bass have invaded southern Maine...It's just a matter of timing of when they'll come blitzing into Muscongus Bay.
I have made a couple "football" Tuna scouting trips around Monhegan Island...Heavy Fog has hampered my search. The next clear day I plan to spend some time offshore scouting for the early arrival of BFT's

In addition to my Striper/Bluefish/Tuna trips I'll be offering light tackle Cod/Groundfish trips to the ledges off Penobscot & Muscungus Bay which have been covered with codfish and other tasty species. Ask for details!!!
